The Schadegg family's remarkable years in Papua New Guinea

Together with his wife Mahela and their children, Lukas swapped the mountains and prosperity of Switzerland for life in the jungle of Papua New Guinea. As technical director of MAF Technologies, Lukas oversaw the electronics, IT and solar energy departments. He installed radio systems and met the growing demand for solar power. He also initiated the Wi-Fi Bible project.

Mahela Schadegg took on the task of managing family life in a completely different cultural setting. The three children essentially grew up in Papua New Guinea. At the same time Mahela was actively involved in the community: she visited people in hospital and took part in church activities. "I learned so much from the people here – through their worldview, their values and their hospitality. It was an honour to serve them," she says gratefully.

For Lukas and Mahela it was a formative time: "We thought we were coming here to teach people something – about life, faith or technology. But in the end we were the ones who received the most," Lukas reflects.

Life in Papua New Guinea brought its challenges: cultural differences, remoteness and a simple living environment. But the Schadegg family sees these experiences as valuable moments that strengthened their faith in God and their bond with one another. "The sacrifices we made in leaving Switzerland are nothing compared with the wealth of experiences and relationships we gained here," Lukas adds.

It specialises in communication solutions such as shortwave radio networks and solar systems, which are essential in remote regions in particular. These technologies make it possible to coordinate medical emergencies, promote education and deliver humanitarian aid more efficiently.
